UK Rock & Soul Duo Cowbell Confirm Release Of Debut Album Beat Stampede July 1
The debut full-length by UK duo Jack Sanham and Wednesday Lyle, collectively known as Cowbell, will see a July 1 U.S. release on Too Much To Offer. Comprising ten original songs of scorching soul and garage rock, the duo combines a lyrical charm with a full-bodied, powerful sound that belies their stripped-down set-up. Taking cues from both sides of the Atlantic the album traverses Cowbell's love for classic U.S labels such as Stax, Motown and Sun as well as legendary British R & B bands such as The Small Faces, The Kinks and The Zombies.
Formed in 2009 with Sanham on guitar and vocals and Lyle on drums and vocals, Cowbell released a first single "Oh Girl" and by the summer of 2010 quickly became favorites at BBC 6 and XFM in the UK. Later that year a second single, "Never Satisfied," was single of the week on both BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 coinciding with a tour supporting the newly reformed CAST.
In spring 2011 the band returned to all-analog Gizzard Studio to record their third single "Hanging by a Thread." Recording to tape using analog equipment ideally suits their stripped back sound and aesthetic.
After a busy year of touring Jack and Wednesday went back to Gizzard to work on their debut Beat Stampede in 2013. In addition to a handful of their signature garage pop songs the album showcases more diversity, from the down-home country style finger picking of "All in Good Time" to the Delta Slide on the rollicking "Tallulah." It also sees the introduction of Wednesday singing lead vocal on two songs the honky-tonk garage blues of "Love Got me Down" and the ethereal "Castle Walls."
