Minneapolis legends The Suburbs who, in the 1980's, helped define that city's acclaimed and immeasurably influential music scene alongside The Replacements, Prince, Husker Du and Soul Asylum, have returned to record their first new album after a 27 years hiatus, Si Sauvage, out August 27. The album follows a busy 2013 for The Suburbs as their 1984 hit "Love is the Law" saw new life serving as a popular theme song and slogan for same-sex marriage proponents during Minnesota's contentious marriage equality debates. Same-sex marriage was legalized in the state in May.
Recorded in Minneapolis in 2013, the album's 10 original tracks were written by vocalist/keyboardist Chan Poling and vocalist/instrumentalist Beej Chaney, and were produced by Poling along with guitarist and bassist Steve Price. Also performing on the album are original member Hugo Klaers (drums), Stevie Brantseg (guitar) and a horn section featuring Max Ray (saxophone), Rochelle Becker (baritone saxophone) and Stephen Kung (trumpet). Janey Winterbauer and Aby Wolf lend backup vocals.
The Suburbs are already confirmed to perform at New York's Mercury Lounge September 27. More U.S. dates to be confirmed soon.
Originally recording six albums, including two for Mercury/Polygram (featuring their signature song “Love Is The Law”) and A&M Records, The Suburbs were featured on MTV during that channels early days and voted among the "100 Most Influential Minnesota Musical Entities of the Twentieth Century" by The Minneapolis Star Tribune.
The Suburbs have started a Kickstarter campaign to pursue their independence from the ever-changing music industry. Fans can pledge a range of dollar levels via the Kickstarter campaign choosing from a variety of packages and gifts while pre-ordering the new album. More here: http://kck.st/1aWjcpr
