“I think the older I get the clearer those memories become—and the more precious too,” Ron reflects. “When I wrote 1995’s “Galbraith Street,” my publisher at the time told me I was too young to write a song like that. Maybe he was right?” “Cigarette & Cocktail” follows the album’s first single, “Don’t Lose Sight” and continues to reveal the emotional landscape of Hangover Terrace.
The album was sparked during Ron’s extended stay in the UK in late 2024, following his Sexsmith at Sixty tour. Inspired by time spent recording at London’s Eastcote Studios with longtime collaborator Martin Terefe, the sessions marked a creative turning point—bringing a rawer, more introspective edge to the new material.
“This record speaks of the hangover I feel from the last few years of pandemic and life knocking us around,” Ron explains. Hangover Terrace moves away from the peaceful, pastoral tone of recent releases and dives into more bruised emotional terrain—marked by personal loss, shifting friendships, and a changed perspective on the world. The recording process in London was both relaxed and invigorating, with contributions from past collaborators like Ed Harcourt and Claes Bjorklund, as well as surprise appearances from guitarist Robbie McIntosh and legendary producer Chris Kimsey. One especially meaningful feature came from Nora Joy Stephens, a rising songwriter from Ron’s hometown of Stratford, whose voice closes the album on a poignant note.
With songs like “Camelot Towers”, “Angel on My Shoulder”, and “Cigarette & Cocktail”, Sexsmith continues to do what he’s always done best: write honest, emotionally resonant songs that reflect the quiet truths of everyday life. “I never worry about repeating myself,” he says. “The version of me that wrote those early records couldn’t write these songs.” With 17 studio albums and a body of work covered by artists like k.d. lang, Rod Stewart, and Nick Lowe, Ron Sexsmith remains one of Canada’s most revered songwriters. Through changing times, his music remains grounded, reflective, and deeply human. “Don’t give up,” he says now, looking back on the road so far. “Be patient. Stay focused on what’s real.”
