U.S. tour dates confirmed for April

JaRon Marshall + the collective, a 4-piece instrumental group from Austin, Texas featuring JaRon Marshall (Black Pumas), Brian Donohoe (Progger, Snarky Puppy), Michael Longoria (Bob Schneider, Patty Griffin) and Chris Loveland (Clunis) will release their debut album entitled earth sounds on April 14, 2023. The album’s first single “constellations” is out today.

Life requires all of the emotions: sadness, rage, inquisitiveness, but also peace, love, and unity. “constellations” is a piece that represents completion and equilibrium. From the balanced chord progression backed by straight ahead hip-hop drum work, to the fact that this tune was written in a hotel room in Switzerland on the last day of a European tour, this track is meant to be a peaceful and feel-good outlook on life.

Inspired by jazz-hop influencers such as Robert Glasper and Chris Dave, as well as the modern spiritualists Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings, Marshall + the collective recorded 12 originals for earth sounds in Austin at Black Pumas’ producer, Adrian Quesada’s studio Electric Deluxe Recorders.

“For my first full length undertaking, I wanted to strip everything away and make something that feels natural – in spite of the digital world that we live in today,” said JaRon. “The album title, earth sounds, represents the organic nature of the record. It was mostly recorded live, with only acoustic and analog instruments. With this release, I hope to shed light on the talented cast around me that helped me to create something sincere.”

The group was formed in 2020, when Marshall contacted Longoria, asking him to add some live drums to his EP The Black Power Tape, which was described by Okayplayer as “exploring the myriad of emotions that come with being Black in America, all against a backdrop of soothing, soulful music.”

The full quartet made their recording debut on Marshall’s follow up EP, The Prequel. Once the world began to open back up, the group recorded with national Austin acts such as Adrian Quesada on his film scoring endeavors and BLK ODYSSY, under the production eye of Marshall.

In late summer of 2022, Marshall wrote an instrumental album that was recorded and performed live by the quartet, with the vision and ambition to represent the thriving Austin jazz scene on a worldwide scale. The result is earth sounds by JaRon Marshall.

Ahead of the highly anticipated album release JaRon Marshall + the collective are already an in-demand performing act and are confirmed to play at multiple parties and showcases during the 2023 edition of SXSW between March 13-18, preceded by a string of international shows in London, Dublin and Paris. In April, JaRon Marshall will tour the U.S. (as the opening act for Vieux Farka Touré and Neal Francis) with an initial run of seven shows from Aspen, CO, to Flagstaff, AZ.
