From the opening count, you can hear Horn’s authority out front — an extravagant confidence that peaks during her daredevil scat solo, and cruises on through the last syncopated hit. – WBGO
This ambitious and exhilarating project that represents some of Jazzmeia Horn’s very best work to date and may just be the one that takes her from nominee to winner at the next Grammy Award ceremony. – GLIDE MAGAZINE
This album is a mix of bold and broad strokes as well as details as minute as scrimshaw. A real work of art! – JAZZ WEEKLY
Jazzmeia Horn and Her Noble Force have released her highly anticipated new album Dear Love, today September 10. The album marks her first big-band effort, a recording that brims with the combination of her assured delivery and spoken word segments, deft arrangements and fiery musical ideas.
While the album, released on the vocalist’s own Empress Legacy Records, functions as a platform for Horn to showcase both her perception of the world and her endlessly unfolding talents, it also granted the composer a setting to expound on personal experiences, shuttling them through a sui generis musical prism.
The album comes on the heels of two widely praised long-players, A Social Call and Love and Liberation, which each garnered Grammy nominations in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category. Assessing a live performance around the time her debut was released, The New York Times noted that “she’s possessed of some distinctive tools, all of which were on display: a pinched, sassy tone in the highest register; a fondness for unguarded duets with her bassist … ; an array of rough, pealing nonverbal sounds that add drama to codas and interludes, hinting at meanings in the music that go beyond what fits on the page.”
Jazzmeia Horn and Her Noble Force will perform a series of album release shows and New York City’s Joe’s Pub November 16-20. Tickets are on sale and available here.
