Live cinema visual artist SUE-C and legendary sound collage group Negativland collaborate in a live audio-visual performance about our minds, the world we live in, and the evolving forms of media and technology that orchestrate our perceptions.

For all those people who bought tickets to our shows in September and November, and then stayed home without asking for a refund, making those shows safer for others to attend — and for all of you who are still staying home now, because it’s definitely not safe to be going to concerts this January — this film’s for you.

But is anything safe? Captured and assembled from our recent run of shows throughout the West and Southwestern United States, IT’S NORMAL FOR SOME THINGS TO COME TO YOUR ATTENTION combines the reality-based concerns of Negativland’s recent studio albums with SUE-C’s pioneering approach to real time digital live animation. The result is a hypnotic dive into the vanishing boundaries between mind and media: a film which draws attention to its own frame, representing an absolutely non-virtual event that required people to actually be in a room — together. Freely viewable on Vimeo and YouTube, one thing’s for certain: in today’s world, the real danger is coming from the screens you’ll be using to watch our film.

Director Ryan Worsley captures a performance that was radically different from night to night using a split-screen technique, juxtaposing multiple shows at once, all synced to a seamless weave across the best moments of each concert: a fixed-media improvisation which only ever happens once, every time you watch it. You won’t even notice how much of it you’re remembering, so remember this: every performance of this work-in-progress is unique, and quite possibly coming to a town near you.

Stay safe, and we hope to see you all soon.

ABOUT NEGATIVLAND:
Since 1980, the 4 or 5 or 6 Floptops known as Negativland, a multimedia collective originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, have been creating records, CDs, video, fine art, books, radio and live performance using appropriated sounds, images, objects, and text. Mixing original materials and original music with things taken from corporately owned mass culture and the world around them, Negativland surreally re-arrange these found bits and pieces to make them say and suggest things that they never intended to. In doing this kind of cultural archaeology and “culture jamming” (a term they coined way back in 1984), Negativland have been sued twice for copyright infringement.
