New York, NY — August 2, 2021 – Word Collections has announced the hiring of Jean Chadwick as VP Copyright and Administration. The announcement follows a recently completed round of fund raising from Black Squirrel Partners.
Currently representing copyrights and works by the Richard Pryor Estate, Robin Williams Estate, George Carlin Estate, Margaret Cho, Bill Hicks Estate, Louie Anderson, Bill Engvall, Muhammad Ali Estate, Bill Hicks Estate, Louie Anderson, Jim Breuer, Andrew Dice Clay and more (see below for larger list). Word Collections licenses legally required, non-musical Literary Work rights in spoken word comedy and other performing arts for streaming services such as Spotify, YouTube, broadcast radio (digital and terrestrial) and others.
Based in Los Angeles, Chadwick has spent over two decades as an operational, licensing and music publishing administrator. She is a leader with extensive knowledge and expertise in: digital content management, music publishing administration, music and telcom services and a comprehensive understanding of the music industry, with a focus on tech solutions. She most recently served as Senior Vice President Operations for Spirit Production Music managing, licensing, collecting and tracking income for over 200K compositions and sound recordings. She previously served as Sr. Director Content Operations at Napster licensing and paying royalties for the entire repertoire of over 20,000,000 sound recordings and musical compositions. Additionally, as Sr Director Content Operations at Muve/Cricket Wireless she managed licensing and royalties for a first of its kind bundled music telcom service. As Director Operations for Native Instruments Sounds.com, she was responsible for licensing and paying royalties for over 600,000 sound recordings cleared for sampling and derivative works, and as Associate Director of eCommerce at Universal Music Group working to license its catalog to digital music services.
“The goal is simple,” says Word Collections founder Price. “As with music, if you want to use spoken word recorded in a sound recording, make sure you have permission, pay a commensurate royalty and the entity that earned the royalty should be paid the royalty. Just because Robin Williams speaks his routines as opposed to sings his routines does not mean his estate should not be paid. As logical and simple as it sounds, this is not happening. Jean has the unparalleled unique distinction of not only having the right experience but also the moral and philosophical drive to get creators paid.”
“I am excited to work Jeff and the entire Word Collections team,” says Chadwick. “We are going to solve a global problem that no one else has been able to solve. In this digital time there is no excuse for creators to not be getting paid what they deserve. Philosophically this is a perfect match and the technology we are building is unparallel. I look forward to leveraging my experience to solve this problem for the global services and to make sure creators are getting paid.”
